Delete a configuration

What deleting a configuration does: it leaves the dashboard and upload history, nothing is removed from your site, and a new configuration can take over the same items.

Delete configuration is at the bottom of the configuration editor (open it with the settings icon on the card). It is for configurations you no longer use.

What happens#

The dialog says it before you confirm: It disappears from the dashboard, and its N uploads disappear from the upload history. Files can no longer be uploaded to it. Nothing is removed from your site.

  • The configuration disappears from the dashboard, and its uploads disappear from the Uploads list; the pages of those uploads are no longer available.
  • Files can no longer be uploaded to it, and a deleted configuration never publishes automatically.
  • Nothing is removed from your site. Posts, pages, articles, images, categories and tags that were published stay exactly as they are. The message after deleting says Content already published to your site was not changed.
  • Behind the scenes the configuration, its versions, its uploads and its results are kept (hidden from you) for support and for the workspace's history, and they follow the retention periods in data and retention: the uploaded files still expire after 30 days. There is no button to restore a deleted configuration.

Taking over the items with a new configuration#

Content Uploader remembers what it published to each site by the items' IDs, not by the configuration. A new configuration for the same site and content type therefore recognises the items that were published before:

  • with a record ID column, rows are matched by their IDs and updated, not created again;
  • without one, rows are matched by slug or title, among everything published for that site and content type, including items that another configuration published.

So deleting a configuration to start over is safe as long as you keep the same IDs: the review of the first file shows the existing items as updated or unchanged, not new. Check the counts before you publish.

When deletion is refused#

A configuration cannot be deleted while one of its files is being worked on, because a hidden file could no longer be followed or retried:

  • “file.csv” is being published. Delete this configuration when publishing has finished.
  • “file.csv” is still being checked. Delete this configuration when the check has finished.

Wait for the file to finish (its status becomes Done, Ready for review or Needs attention) and delete again. A team member can delete configurations of the sites they were given.

If you only want it to stop#

You do not have to delete a configuration to stop using it: unused configurations do nothing. If you want to prevent accidental uploads, delete it, or disconnect the site (managing connected sites).
