Updating the Joomla connector
See which connector version your site runs, update it with Joomla's updater or by installing the new package, and check the result. Your connection and mappings carry over.

The connector and the service are updated independently. The service stays compatible with older connector versions where it can, and tells you when an update is needed.
Which version do I have?#
The Sites page shows it after the word Connector, for example Joomla 6.1.4 · connected · Connector 1.0.0. Joomla's Components → Content Uploader Connector shows it too, under Versions (Connector 1.0.0, protocol 1). After you update the connector, select Refresh fields on the Sites page to make Content Uploader read the new version.
How to update#
With Joomla's updater. Joomla checks contentuploader.com for new versions of the connector, as it does for other extensions; these checks send no content. When a new version is available, System → Update → Extensions lists it and shows its changelog before you update. Select the connector and Update. Joomla checks the download's checksum and refuses a file that does not match.
By installing the new package. Download the current package from Sites (installing the connector) and install it in System → Install → Extensions exactly as the first time. Joomla recognises the extension and updates it in place.
Either way, the connection, the chosen publishing account, your configurations and everything that was published carry over: the connector keeps its records, and when a release needs a database change Joomla runs the schema update itself. An update never deletes articles, categories, tags or images, and it keeps your choice if you had disabled the web services plugin.
After the update#
- Open Sites and select Refresh fields. The line under the address now shows the new connector version.
- If a configuration's mapping is affected, the next review says so: The destination's fields changed since the configuration was saved. Open the configuration to map any new fields, or confirm the changes in the review.
When Content Uploader says the connector is outdated#
- The Content Uploader extension on this site is outdated or not active. Update or enable it, then retry. Either the connector is too old for this feature, or the Web Services - Content Uploader Connector plugin is disabled (System → Plugins). Enable it, or update, and then retry.
- The extension returned an incompatible protocol or schema. Update the connector. Update it.
Upgrading Joomla itself#
The same package works on Joomla 5 and 6. When you upgrade the site from 5 to 6, the connector keeps its installation identity, its connection and the mappings: nothing has to be reinstalled, and Content Uploader does not treat the site as a new one. Check that the site still meets the requirements of the new version (Joomla 6 needs PHP 8.3), then select Refresh fields.
Things to know#
- Disabling the web services plugin or uninstalling the connector stops access at once (disconnecting and uninstalling).
- Keep only one copy of the connector installed. Joomla's installer updates the installed copy when you upload a newer package.
